How Does Crime Stoppers Work?

  • Over The Years

Our History

1976 Origins In Alburquerque

Crime Stoppers first launched in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when Detective Greg MacAleese used a televised re-enactment of a homicide, an anonymous tipline, and a reward offer to solve a crime within 72 hours. This revolutionary model was soon replicated worldwide.

1982 Founding Calgary – Canada’s First Program

  • 1982 marked a milestone as the first Crime Stoppers program in Canada, established in Calgary by community leaders, including former Lieutenant‑Governor Lois Mitchell.
  • Leadership included local businessmen and law enforcement, building on the Albuquerque framework to enable anonymous tip submissions via a toll‑free line 1‑800‑222‑8477 and website.

Community Testimonials & Media Coverage

  • Former Chief Constable Mark Neufeld praised the close cooperation among community, media, and police in leveraging anonymous tips for safety.
  • Mayor Jyoti Gondek reflected on growing up with McGruff the Crime Dog, acknowledging Calgary’s pioneering role in establishing Crime Stoppers.
  • Former Lt‑Gov Lois Mitchell, a founder, called the initiative “remarkable”, celebrating Calgary’s innovation in public safety.

Organizational Framework

  • Run by a volunteer board, in partnership with local police, media outlets, and community groups.
  • Functions as a registered charitable, not-for-profit entity relying on community donations and sponsors.
  • Key promise: 100% anonymity, no caller ID, no recording, secure tip-handling via phone and web.

Our Milestones

Since its founding in 1982 as Canada’s first Crime Stoppers program, Calgary Crime Stoppers has led the way in anonymous community-based crime prevention. From the early success of its tipline to innovative awareness efforts like the 2012 LRT car wrap, $1.5 million in rewards by 2015, and government funding support in 2022, the program continues to evolve. In recent years, high-visibility campaigns such as the 2024 branded transit bus and the 2025 Calgary Tower lighting in red and white have reinforced public trust and civic pridemarking over four decades of impact, awareness, and community partnership.
