What Makes A Good Tip?

There are no bad tips, but what makes a good tip great is in the details!

What Makes A Good Tip?

There are no bad tips, but what makes a good tip great is in the details!

The Building Blocks of a Good Tip

When submitting a tip, please DO NOT give your name or any contact info as we want you to remain ANONYMOUS.

Also, do not attempt to seek out additional information about a crime on your own. Leave this to investigators. Your tip will be forwarded by Crime Stoppers to the proper investigative agencies.

Examples of a good Tip:
“I recognize the man shown on CTV News wanted by the police for setting a building on fire. He goes by the nickname “Lambo” and is often seen near the 7-Eleven on 16 Ave NW. He sometimes drives a dark blue Honda Civic”
“A group calling themselves “East Side Crew” hangs around the basketball courts at X every night after 9pm. They wear red hoodies and are seen exchanging bags of cash.”
“A man known as “J-Rock” is recruiting teenages outside a convenience store on XXX, telling them to sell drugs. He drives a silver Dodge Charger with the license plate starting with CVF”
“A store owner on XX Ave is being forced to pay protection money. A man nicknamed “Big Mo” comes every friday evening to collect cash”
“At an apartment on X Ave SW, people are coming and going at all hours, staying only a few minutes. Packages are handed over at the door”

When submitting your tip, focus on these key questions:

Who

Who is involved?
Do you know their names or nicknames?
Can you provide a description? (age, height, weight, hair color & style, eye colour & glasses if worn, clothing worn and any identifying features like tattoos or scars).
Do you know the address, place of work or school of the suspect(s) and/or victim(s)?

where

Where did the crime occur?
Where does the suspect(s) live?
Can you provide the city, nearest cross streets or specific address where the crime took place?
Can you provide a description of the crime location (building, school, park, neighbourhood, etc.)

When

When did the crime occur (date and time)?
Have you noticed the crime happening more than once?

What

What type of crime are you reporting? (vandalism, bullying, theft, drugs, assault, hit & run, etc. )
What did you see or hear? (remember, even the smallest detail could be important!)

Please Remember

A Tip ID is provided to you once you submit online or over the call the Tip, with this Tip ID, Calgary Crime Stoppers with support from law enforcement agencies can leave additional comments, queries, clarifications etc.  but its on the Tipster to check back using the Tip ID if any message has been left as no email or phone number is ever recorded or captured, through this mechanism its so important that you provide as many details as you can the first time.

Do not withhold submitting a tip because you are unsure of all the details surrounding the “Who“, “Where“, “When” and “What” aspects of a suspected crime.  Even the smallest detail you can provide may end up being the key to solving a crime.

Any information you provide will be forwarded to the proper investigative agencies.

Disclaimer
