Case Summary
On June 13, 1933, in the early morning hours, Inspector Joe Carruthers and other officers responded to reports of a house prowler in the 2200 block of 16A Street West in the Scarborough area. Upon coming into the area, a suspect was spotted and Insp. Carruthers and another officer gave chase and became separated. As Insp. Carruthers raised his flashlight looking for the suspect in the back alley in the 200 block of Superior Avenue, the suspect opened fire. A bullet passed through Insp. Carruthers chest and he died immediately. His killer was never found.
